Planner of the Month – August 2010

Deep blues and natural elements take decor to the seaside in Julie Neilsen’s August Planner of the Month tablescape.

After graduating from NAIT’s Interior Design Technology program in 2000, Julie started her design career space planning and decorating showhomes for builders and clients. In 2007, Julie wanted to shift her passion for decor design and creating beautiful spaces for others into the exciting event planning realm. Julie’s passion for decor, event planning, and design skills and knowledge made her a perfect fit for our Event Planning Headquarters team. She has completed over 30 events since joining Event Planning Headquarters.

Having planned her own wedding, Julie understands the pressure and stress involved in creating that perfect day. She believes in helping couples create the wedding atmosphere they desire first and allowing the details of the wedding to compliment that atmosphere.

“There are so many details involved in planning a wedding! I remember how stressful planning my wedding was, so I love that I am able to use my expertise to take some of the stress of planning, decorating, and creating that great atmosphere away from the couple, enabling them to enjoy engagement and their wedding day. As an event consultant, I often look to fashion design and home decor to find new and exciting trends that I can use for clients’ events. The Ocean Blue tablescape takes inspiration from the soft, rippling forms of a dress, evoking the feeling of waves in an ocean. To accomplish this look I used a beautiful, linen tablecloth that Special Event Rentals carries called Bermuda Blue to capture the color of warm, tropical waters from an island getaway. An overlay in Peacock Organza is gathered and draped across the center of the table to create the look and feel of waves.”

Julie added sparkle and shine through the use of glass charger plates, vases, and votive holders, as if they are a reflection of the sun off the tips of waves. A collection of clear and colored glass beads add layers to mirror the various shades found in the ocean. Scattered around the table are small shells, perhaps collected from your own trip to the ocean! Bits of silver in the silverware, napkin holders, and place card holders help to ground the blues by acting as a metallic neutral.

Use inspiration from your own home décor and wardrobe to develop a scheme for your event décor, as it will end up a great reflection of your personality. Incorporate collections and draw from memories of your own travels to inspire details that will set the tone of your event atmosphere.
