On August 12, 2010, Special Event Rentals and our event planning division Event Planning Headquarters were very excited to provide a number of our new rentals to Southgate Centre for their 40th Anniversary celebrations.
Southgate History
On August 12th, 1970, Southgate opened its doors to the general public. Known as the largest shopping centre in Western Canada at the time, Southgate opened to great anticipation and excitement from Edmonton and area consumers. 40 years later, Southgate is still providing chic, modern shopping options that continue to bring customers back to the centre.
“Southgate Centre is proud to be celebrating its 40th anniversary on August 12th,” said Southgate General Manager, Paul Fairbridge. “All of the events planned over the next few months will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the shopping centre’s history and thank the citizens of Edmonton and the community for their support over the years.”
“So much has changed since the centre opened on August 12th, 1970,” Fairbridge said. “Long gone are the farmer’s fields to the South. Just look at the evolution – not only the changes at Southgate Centre and within surrounding communities – but throughout the city at large. The Community and the businesses at Southgate Centre have prospered over the years. Ivanhoe Cambridge remains committed to the property and the City of Edmonton and we look forward to what the future will bring for the city and the community.”
From August 12th to November 9th, customers can view an exhibit on Southgate’s history, including interesting articles and photos from the past and present, as well as video clips guaranteed to trigger some memories.
Southgate plans to celebrate this milestone with those who have made it possible, their customers. From August 12th to November 9th, Southgate will be hosting and sponsoring a number of events and giveaways including a fashion show with the editor of Flare magazine and a dream trip to the 4 fashion capitals of the world!
