With the 83rd Annual Academy Awards coming up on February 27th, we’re giving you an all access pass to the best tips & tricks for hosting your very own award-worthy party. As any Oscar fan knows, you need a comfortable seat, good food and it helps if you’ve seen some of the movies. Here are our tips for a fun and casual Oscar Party:
Guest List & Invitations
Like the Super Bowl or Stanley Cup, the Oscars are a glued-to-the-sofa event so make sure the group is small enough that there’s comfy seating for all. Go to www.evite.com for their Oscar Invites – it will get your guests into the spirit without you having to do anything other than entering in the information and pressing SEND.
Nosh
With any sofa party, finger foods and appetizers work best. This allows you to fill up during commercials and be back in your seat in time for the award for Best Song. Whether you make your own or hit the frozen section at the market, have an assortment of delicious goodies for your guests.
Cast Your Vote
When your guests arrive and get seated, pass out official ballots including each of the categories. You can get these here. Have everyone pick their winner in advance and have a prize for whoever picks the most winners at the end of the show. Moet is the official champagne of the Academy Awards so we think this would make a great prize. Movie passes are another great option.
Commercial Breaks
Let’s face it, the Oscars are long. Hard to believe since they are always cutting off the acceptance speeches. To help pass the time during commercials, we’ve got some great games that are actually fun:
-
Play a Hollywood variation of 20 Questions. As each guest arrives, pin a star’s name on his or her back. The goal for each guest is to find out who they are by asking only “yes” and “no” questions of the other guests. Limit each person to one question per guest. This is a great game to encourage mingling.
-
WHO SAID THAT? – Write famous lines from movies on individual slips of paper. Fold slips and put into a jar. Each guest takes a turn pulling out a slip, reading or acting out the line, while everyone else tries to guess which actor/actress they are and which movie the line comes from.
-
Movie Trivia – Put trivia questions in a basket or top hat, and let guests play during the commercials. Provide a list of movies and movie stars, and have guests match as many actors/actresses with the films they starred in, or have them try to match movie titles with the year the movie was released. Another fun game is to see who can name the most films that have won an Academy Award™ for Best Picture.
For some silly prizes to give away with these games, go to your local big box or video store and pick up some movies in their giant clearance bins that definitely did NOT win an Oscar (maybe a Razzie, though!). Be sure that your winners give an acceptance speech, worthy of the evening.
