Creating a Memorable Summer Event

After a long and cold winter here in Edmonton, the staff at Special Event Rentals have been anticipating some warm weather, patio lunches, and ice-cold lemonade. With the last few weekends being quite beautiful out, we think this is a great time to start thinking about planning your own backyard get-together with family and friends. Leave the hot dogs for camping and check out the list of 2011’s top food trends:

Top 10 Canadian Menu Trends
1. Locally sourced food
2. Sustainability
3. Organic produce
4. Artisan cheeses
5. Simplicity/back to basics
6. Nutritional/healthy cuisine
7. Free-range poultry/pork
8. Small plates/tapas/mezze/dim sum
9. Bite size/mini-desserts
10. Super-fruits (e.g., acai, goji berry, mangosteen)

While a number of these items have been trendy for the past few years, we are starting to see a huge rise in the Spanish tradition of tapas. We love the idea of creating or ordering a number of smaller plates that are then shared among the table. This sharing helps to bring the group together and bond over a meal that is completely shared by everyone. This is a also a great way to throw a new style of potluck. In order to round out the tapas experience we suggest creating a long rectangular table (also known as a king’s table) that all your guests can be
seated at.

Now that you have excellent food, it is time to make the decor match! Whether you want to go all out or just add a few finishing touches, creating simple and seasonal decor will cut costs and keep your event feeling like summer.

Centrepiece Ideas
Who knew your veggie tray could make such a great centerpiece for a casual dinner or picnic lunch. Using a low and long container (window planters work great) line different vegetables in rows to create the look shown below. Create pre-made veggie skewers and line them vertically if your container is taller than your veggies.

Summer Decorating Centrepieces

Simple never looked so good. We absolutely love this candle centerpiece. The designers at Martha Stewart Living created this centerpiece using 2 similarly shaped but different sized vases. The smaller vase is placed inside the larger and colored water is poured inside the larger vase only. A candle is then placed inside the smaller vase and lit. Not only is this centerpiece quick to create, it can be customized to your event colors and style.

Tackling Your Wedding Vows

While weddings have become huge occasions, often with hundreds of family & friends in attendance, they are still about one thing: two people coming together to commit to each other and profess their love for one another.  But with many people feeling that the importance of the day gets lost in the pomp and ceremony of the celebrations, more couples are opting to write their own vows to personalize the day even more.

Knowing where to start and what to write can be difficult.  Afterall, we weren’t all blessed with Shakespeare’s natural abilities, so here are a few tips to help you on the road to write meaningful wedding vows.

Forget that anybody else is there
It can be daunting to get up in front of a large crowd and say openly everything you think and feel, so forget about them.  This moment is about you and your partner.  Be sincere and honest about what you feel.

You don’t have to impress your guests with your poetic prowess
You don’t speak in iambic pentameter on a regular basis.  In fact, you probably haven’t heard the word used since English class in high school so forget about using flowery language and making it a grand gesture.  Keep it simple.  Plus, you will probably be saying your vows from memory so if it’s too complicated, you might not remember what you planned to say.

Speak from the heart
Easier said than done?  Well just tell your partner why it is you love them and your reasons for marrying them, flaws and all!  If you need any inspiration, look no further than one of the greatest romantic movies of all time, ‘When Harry Met Sally’.  Just don’t quote it or you’re likely to get caught – and that is definitely not romantic.

“I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out.  I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich.  I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts.  I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes.  And I love that you’re the last person I want to talk to before I go to bed at night.”
