Featured Recipe: Fresh Strawberry Pie

Strawberry Whip Cream Pie

Nothing is better on a hot, summer day than a light, fruit based dessert. See our Strawberry Whipped Cream Pie recipe below

Nothing beats fresh fruit in the summer. Whether you pick yourself, or visit a farmer’s market or your local grocery store, using fresh is best. This dessert is no exception. Simple flavors and simple instructions together give you a pure and irresistible combination. Try it this weekend and it’s guaranteed to become one of your favorites too.

Strawberry Whipped Cream Pie

Crust:
1 – 1/3 c. graham cracker crumbs
1/4 c. sugar
1/4 cup flour
6 Tablespoons melted butter

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.  Mix everything together by hand, and press firmly into a 10-inch springform pan.  The crust should also go up the sides of the pan about three inches.  Bake in the oven for about 12 minutes, until it has firmed up a bit.  Let it cool while you prepare the filling.

Filling:
5 cups strawberries, washed and stems removed.
1/4 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon gelatin powder, soaked in 1/4 cup cold water

Roughly chop one cup of the strawberries and place in a small saucepan with the sugar.  Cook until reduced to a puree.  Remove from the heat, then stir in the soaked gelatin.  Mix with the remaining strawberries, then immediately pour into the cooled crust.  Spread the strawberry mixture out so the top is level, then prepare the whipped cream topping.

Topping:
1-1/2 cups heavy cream
1 Tablespoon powdered sugar
1 teaspoon gelatin powder
2 tablespoons milk

Whip the cream and sugar to stiff peaks.  Soak the gelatin in the milk for two minutes, then heat gently until dissolved.  Gradually fold the whipped cream into the gelatin, then spread on top of the strawberries.  Chill for several hours before removing from the pan and slicing.

Venue: Enterprise Square

A few short years ago, the University of Alberta bought, fully renovated, and expanded Edmonton’s historic Hudson’s Bay Building. Enterprise Square was born.  Housing not only the University’s downtown campus, this location is a unique open concept venue with a sky-lit atrium, state-of -the-art sound system, in-house catering, parking and more.  Perfect for meetings and corporate mixers, Enterprise Square has a “mini conference centre” including boardrooms, meeting rooms, and tiered classrooms.  The Atrium is a beautiful space for cocktails, company parties, awards ceremonies & wedding receptions.  They also have the old AGA space for rent as well as some smaller rooms with kitchen space for luncheons.  It is a wonderful space right in the heart of our downtown and definitely worth a look for your next event.

Visit Enterprise Square online for more details and information.  Both Sherry and Trish are incredibly accommodating and we think their venue is a hidden gem!  Contact Sherry Kully @ 780.248.1057 or Trish Zuk @ 780.248.1056.

Special Event Rentals had the opportunity to showcase our rentals in the Enterprise Square window. See our YouTube clip below.

Tent Events: Renting Lights and Flooring

Tent Lighting Special Event Rentals

Tent Lighting: Add color and drama to your tent lighting.

The type of event you are holding will determine the type and amount of lighting you require. From basic lighting you can upgrade to halogen flood lights or specialty lighting. The halogen flood lights are placed on the centre poles of the tent and are directed upwards. This creates a wash on the tent top which illuminates the entire area. Any of our lighting can be placed on dimmer switches to help create the atmosphere you want. You can also use globe lighting, which comes in 5 or 10 globe options and pole lamps with globe lighting to build a summer garden party theme inside your tent. Another option is our tent light fixtures, which are to scale with the pole tents and create a soft glow for an evening event.  If you want to create a lounge atmosphere we have just added coloured LED lighting to our lighting inventory. Pair this with our expanded line of lounge furniture and you can create a unique venue for your event.

Dance Floor in Tent Special Event Rentals

Flooring: Adding a dance floor to your tent allows the tent to become a complete wedding reception or event venue.

Depending on the surface you are setting the tent on there are several options for flooring. Many people choose to create a dance floor within the tent and others may want the entire ground surface covered. Starting with a stable sub-floor you can then choose a variety of options including black or white marble and oak, maple or teak flooring.

When you start planning your event decide how you want to incorporate a tent; even if you just want cover in case of rain you can make some creative choices that will allow it to join seamlessly with your location and theme. Plan to have the walls open if the weather is nice and extend some of the guest tables to the very edge and even outside the tent. Use greenery and floral to create a garden-like feel and choose linens, accessories and soft lighting that enhance this feeling. If your intention is to create a more enclosed venue you may wish to choose a larger tent size and create different areas within the tent. Add one of our new high-end bar, some cocktail tables and lounge seating to create a relaxed lounge feel. This will also give your guests room to mingle with each other while enjoying before dinner drinks. You can also add custom flags to the top of your tent; using a corporate logo or the couples monogram on the flag will add that personal touch to an event. Choose your decor based on your event and location so everything works together. Special Event Rentals has decor and rental coordinators that are able to assist you in creating, enhancing and executing your decor to ensure everything works together.

Our brand new tent washer keeps our tent inventory clean and pristine; this is the only tent washer in the prairie provinces and ensures you will be pleased with the condition of our tents. Add a set of double doors to any pole or frame tent if you want to keep the elements out, we recommend reserving these with your tent if your event is early in the spring or in the fall; another option is to add tent heaters to help keep guests warm in the cooler evenings of these times. Consider using solid walls to create a visual barrier if you want to hide certain areas outside the tent or behind the head table at weddings to help create a backdrop.

Whatever the event, Special Event Rentals will be able to help you find the answers to any questions you may have about a tent event. Call us at 780-435-2211 and one of our tent specialists will work with you to create the event of your dreams.

Here at Special Event Rentals and our divisions, we are often asked how to use equipment. While instructions are included in the majority of our rentals, there are some items that customers are often stumped on how to use. One of the most frequent questions lately (being that it is wedding season) is how to use our chair wraps and chair ties. Below are two short instructional videos on using our chair wraps and chair ties.
