Mother Day Gift Ideas

Yes, most women love the traditional offerings of flowers, perfume and jewelry, but every woman has something specific that tugs harder at her heart strings. Here are some suggestions to inspire creative thought for how to really love on your mama this year. Notice the common thread of offering your time. This is arguably the greatest commodity of our world today, so it means that much more when you freely give of yours.

Bliss Yoga Spa
While massages, pedicures and facials have likely been on the Mother’s Day gift roster before, we assure you, your mother has never experienced a spa treatment like the ones offered at Bliss. As the name so aptly states, this spa is bliss. It’s the perfect treat for a hard working mother in need of some calm pampering and time to unwind, but it’s made even better when enjoyed together as you sip tea in the relaxing spa lounge pre and post treatment.

Jacek Chocolate Tasting Experience
This local chocolatier offers two hour chocolate tastings to thrill your senses and create an unforgettable experience while giving you an understanding of the chocolate making process. Learn about the art of fine chocolate and taste an assortment of different flavours. It’s fun and tasty, but best of all, you’re sure to create memories during this unique experience together.

Kind Words
Gifts need not be expensive to make a significant impact. In fact, so often the most cherished gifts are the ones most thought out, not instantaneously purchased. A well crafted card or personal letter detailing exactly what you appreciate and love about your mother is a guaranteed tear jerker. It gives examples of what you love about your relationship with her and highlights why you are proud that so much of who she is has become a part of who you are. Gush about her! Stroke her ego. Don’t take for granted that she knows how you feel. Forego the mall hunting for the “perfect gift” and spend time spelling it out instead.

Acts of Service
Wash all her windows, clear out her cupboards, scrub her baseboards, organize her boxes of photos in the basement, clean up her yard. This call to action is for the mother whose love language is Acts of Service. For her, offering your time and elbow grease registers much higher on her appreciation scale than a Tiffany’s box tied with beautiful ribbon.

What’s Your Wedding Style? Modern Venue & Decor

Bold Minimalist Bride

Bold Minimalist Wedding Decor Inspiration

A bold minimalist bride seeks a venue where the architecture of the building does more for her décor plan than any supporting elements she brings into the space. Ever a proponent of clean lines, the Art Gallery of Alberta, Winspear Centre, and Holes Enjoy Centre top her list for wedding venues. Accenting the glass and steel framework of these locations, she uses crystal clear chiavari chairs to keep the décor clean while still visually stunning. The clarity of the chairs ensure her tables dressed in black and white formal stripe linen receive the full attention they deserve. Clear plexi pillars line her ceremony aisle and also act as display cases for her shallow table centerpieces running down the middle of long feast tables.

Urban Bride

Urban Wedding Inspiration

The urban bride seeks a unique and intimate space, offering unexpected interior construction and location. She chooses a downtown rooftop for her ceremony and uses the city skyline as a dramatic backdrop. For the reception, she opts for a venue with exposed beams, brick and pipes or a completely blank slate to build on with intentional lighting and projections, and – of course – room to dance. Latitude 53, the Yellowhead Brewery or TransAlta Arts Barns are her top choices. She brings in LED bars and furniture, gelato tables and scooper stools, and a strong sound system to ensure the party carries well into the wee hours of the morn.

What’s Your Wedding Style? Glamorous Venue & Decor

Crystal Glam

Crystal Glam

When it comes to decor the Crystal Glam Bride is thinking one thing; sparkle.  But don’t mistake this bride for the pageant or gypsy type; she’s tasteful in her use of sparkle. She chooses sequin linens and dangles crystals from her oversized floral centerpieces. A great venue for this bride is the Delta Edmonton South. The Grande Ballroom boasts large chandeliers and an equally impressive square footage making it a great choice for a large guest list. Not to be out done; The Top Of The Inn attracts brides with it’s 12’ high window walls and a one of a kind starlit ceiling. This bride will keep the palette fairly neutral to balance all the bling. Her venue will get a romantic boost when this bride adds ambient candle light through out the space.

With it’s 24’ high ceilings, opulent chandeliers, and a stage flanked in drapes; the theatrical interior of the Oasis Conference Centre make this venue a perfect choice for the Vintage Glam Bride. The exterior of this venue has an Art Deco feel which this bride is sure to optimize for photos. Ostrich feathers mixed with fresh flowers and tall candelabras are natural centerpiece choices for this bride. Her place settings are a combination of crystal stemware and metallic patterned china. Add in some mercury glass candle holders; and tablecloths in deep, rich tones with European inspired prints to complete this Twenties era look.

What’s Your Wedding Style? Vintage Venue & Decor

Classic Vintage

Classic Vintage Decor

The classic vintage bride will be looking for natural light, detailed windows, and Windsor valences with gold accents to compliment her look.

Hotel Macdonald is the quintessential venue for this vintage bride. With deep rooted history and original Waterford china pattered ceilings. However, if you are looking for local charm than Fort Edmonton Park is a place where time has stopped and you can experience your wedding day as if it was 1885. If you are looking for southern charm than MaGrath Mansion is the perfect ceremony site or convocation hall for its exposed brick detail.

Details such as old jars, lace, pearls, and stationary complete this look.

The rustic vintage bride will be looking for country charm and wood details in her venue to compliment her decor.

Old timers cabin is perfect, with their large brick fireplace and light fixtures while venues like Country Lodge and Blue Meadows Halls offer gorgeous outdoor space complete with wheat fields and horses.

Decor items such as mason jars and wood chiavaris tied with burlap will complete this wedding style.

What’s Your Wedding Style? Modern Attire

Modern Urban Attire
Urban Modern Wedding Attire

What does this couple have that no other couple has? Swag. This wedding attire is youthful and fun, but never at the price of style. The bride and groom are quintessentially “cool” and take every liberty to use fashion as a means of portraying who they are. The bride takes regular fashion cues from Whitney Port, Marion Cotillard and Nicole Richie and keeps her eye on the latest runway collections. But, don’t be fooled; this groom is equally interested in lookin’ fresh. While he’s not Googling the “What’s Hot” fashion lists, he is very aware of his personal style and owns it with confidence. Both the bride and groom are fashion savvy and experiment with trends. Never afraid to dress outside the box, even for what many consider a traditional ceremony, the urban couple takes full advantage of this occasion as their macro fashion moment.

Three little words. Suit and tie. This is the essence of bold and minimal. While most brides gluttonously feed on all of the attention at any other wedding, the bold minimalists boast a breathtaking groom. He doesn’t need the attention; it just happens. Bridesmaids and groomsmen are pristine and tailored in sleek, clean lines of black, white or grey. This bride never tries too hard. She is the epitome of, “when you got it, you got it.” She carries herself with such poise that a striking groom is her best and only necessary accessory. Bringing us full circle to that suit and tie. Preach it, Timberlake.

Vibrant Eclectic
Vibrant Eclectic Attire
The vibrant personality of this eclectic bride shows in her style for her big day. Proof of this is in her old fashioned hair and her modern coloured dress. Letting each bridesmaid personality show with different style of dresses and shoes, even mixing prints and solids. Hand stitched hankies make a great gift that will wipe away the tears of joy.

This is where the earthy eclectic bride’s feminine side comes out, choosing a simple flowing dress with feathers or fresh water pearl accessories. She keeps it natural with hair and makeup and won’t forget her signature floral perfume. The groom is a masculine balance paring traditional trousers with a printed bow tie and suspenders.

What’s Your Wedding Style? Glamorous Attire

Crystal Glam Glam Wedding Attire

Whether she dawns a dramatic mermaid style gown or a full skirted princess ball gown, the Crystal Glam Bride is sure to turn heads on her wedding day.  Her favorite dresses are from designer Pnina Tornai whose signature pieces combine luxurious fabrics with Swarovski crystals for a truly couture look.  Pairing a simple polished updo and Kardashian inspired make up will give her that classic glam feeling.  She will complete her ensemble with a statement necklace and pair of fabulous shoes.  The Groom and his men are likely to be in traditional tuxedos in keeping with the formality of occasion.  Floor length dresses are a must for the bridesmaids, and why not full sequins?

Vintage Glam
Vintage Wedding AttireYou won’t find the Vintage Glam Bride in a big poufy frock on her wedding day.  This bride gravitates more to the feminine, flowing, curve skimming pieces of designer Jenny Packham.  To give her look the authenticity of the 1920s she will pay close attention to the details.  Dresses with ornate beading, a fur or feathered shawl, and a cap veil paired with deep red lips will put her perfectly back in time.  Historically her groom would be in a top hat and tails but in a more modern era a tuxedo and bow tie certainly fit the bill.  Bridesmaids will show some leg in knee length dresses.  They’ll pair deep jewel tones like ruby and emerald with metallic accents and a signature string of pearls.
