With Special guests Renee Strauss and Kevin Lee, of Slice TV’s Brides of Beverly Hills, opening the Fashion Show, a fairytale castle, Ballerina’s, a kid’s performance of “Be our Guest”, and of course more bridal gowns than one can count, the day had everything and anything you’d need to make your dream wedding a reality.

If you weren’t able to make it to this year’s Bridal Fantasy, here is a taste of what you missed…

A Summer Garden Reception

With a table for all seasons, our first table in our line up is perfect for any garden tea party or reception. With white folding resin chairs, satin linens and napkins, and gorgeous green centrepieces, this table is perfect for a quaint backyard wedding, afternoon tea, or an outside gala.

A Cafe Inspired Table

Our next table is perfect for any autumn day, or for some warm colours to brighten up the cold outside. This table brings together classic neutrals with a little burgundy and some burnt orange to create this elegant table.  You can re-create this look by using our votive trio, just add some flowers and you have a gorgeous centrepiece to finish off your table. And for that Tuscan cafe feel, why not add our new Chateau Chairs?

A Princess Peach Reception

Princess Peach would be the first to rave about our next table. With whites, ivories, mint greens, and a lot of peach this table is fitting for any princess. Little royal chairs topped with mini cupcakes make for perfect guest favors, and with a great florist it’s amazing what you can create out of a plain iron tree candle holder.

An Artistic Perfect Table

Our last table is perfect for not only an elegant gala or art gallery showing, but it’s perfect for any “artsy” wedding. The contrast of our silver crinkle linen with accents of bright orange and yellow create a wonderfully bold statement! A finishing touch of our silver tree centrepiece with glass bulbs with matching orchids are a lasting conversation piece.

What’s Your Colour?

This year we decided to feature the colour orange, and the many different styles and designs you can make up using one colour. However, at Special Event Rentals we carry many different styles and textures of linen, so be sure to come by our showroom so we can show you the many different ways you can put your wedding colours to good use!

Stay tuned tomorrow for our last post in our Wedding Trends of 2012 series. We saved the best for last!

With January comes new Bridal Shows, and with new Bridals Shows comes new Bridal Magazines…

In the fall of last year, Special Event Rentals had the pleasure of working with A Modern Proposal on a photoshoot of a wonderful event design. The jewel toned colors were perfect against the autumn leaves.

These photos were so fantastic that we were thrilled to use them in our advertisement in Blush Bridal Magazine. Unfortunately, in our excitement we did not credit the involved parties. We want to give credit where credit is due, and mention the following vendors involved in this creative and inspiring shoot:

Photography: Ryan + Beth
Design: A Modern Proposal
Florals: Akiko Floral Artistry
Stationery: Pinkpolka Design

We do not want to miss an opportunity to credit the individuals who made not only the photoshoot possible, but also our lovely advertisement, and would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Featured Recipe: Fresh Strawberry Pie

Strawberry Whip Cream Pie

Nothing is better on a hot, summer day than a light, fruit based dessert. See our Strawberry Whipped Cream Pie recipe below

Nothing beats fresh fruit in the summer. Whether you pick yourself, or visit a farmer’s market or your local grocery store, using fresh is best. This dessert is no exception. Simple flavors and simple instructions together give you a pure and irresistible combination. Try it this weekend and it’s guaranteed to become one of your favorites too.

Strawberry Whipped Cream Pie

Crust:
1 – 1/3 c. graham cracker crumbs
1/4 c. sugar
1/4 cup flour
6 Tablespoons melted butter

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.  Mix everything together by hand, and press firmly into a 10-inch springform pan.  The crust should also go up the sides of the pan about three inches.  Bake in the oven for about 12 minutes, until it has firmed up a bit.  Let it cool while you prepare the filling.

Filling:
5 cups strawberries, washed and stems removed.
1/4 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon gelatin powder, soaked in 1/4 cup cold water

Roughly chop one cup of the strawberries and place in a small saucepan with the sugar.  Cook until reduced to a puree.  Remove from the heat, then stir in the soaked gelatin.  Mix with the remaining strawberries, then immediately pour into the cooled crust.  Spread the strawberry mixture out so the top is level, then prepare the whipped cream topping.

Topping:
1-1/2 cups heavy cream
1 Tablespoon powdered sugar
1 teaspoon gelatin powder
2 tablespoons milk

Whip the cream and sugar to stiff peaks.  Soak the gelatin in the milk for two minutes, then heat gently until dissolved.  Gradually fold the whipped cream into the gelatin, then spread on top of the strawberries.  Chill for several hours before removing from the pan and slicing.

Venue: Enterprise Square

A few short years ago, the University of Alberta bought, fully renovated, and expanded Edmonton’s historic Hudson’s Bay Building. Enterprise Square was born.  Housing not only the University’s downtown campus, this location is a unique open concept venue with a sky-lit atrium, state-of -the-art sound system, in-house catering, parking and more.  Perfect for meetings and corporate mixers, Enterprise Square has a “mini conference centre” including boardrooms, meeting rooms, and tiered classrooms.  The Atrium is a beautiful space for cocktails, company parties, awards ceremonies & wedding receptions.  They also have the old AGA space for rent as well as some smaller rooms with kitchen space for luncheons.  It is a wonderful space right in the heart of our downtown and definitely worth a look for your next event.

Visit Enterprise Square online for more details and information.  Both Sherry and Trish are incredibly accommodating and we think their venue is a hidden gem!  Contact Sherry Kully @ 780.248.1057 or Trish Zuk @ 780.248.1056.

Special Event Rentals had the opportunity to showcase our rentals in the Enterprise Square window. See our YouTube clip below.

Featured Recipe: The Sweet Smell of BBQ

Summer Bbqs and grilling

Fire up the grill and start enjoying the summer!

If there’s one thing to look forward to every summer, it has to be BBQ.  Although I have been known to pull the BBQ as close to the patio door as possible in January when I simply cannot wait any longer, there is nothing like sitting out in the warm Summer sun, a cool beverage in hand and take in the smell of something incredible sizzling on the grill.

The best way to tell the temperature of your fire is to use the Traditional Hand Test. Hold your hand about three inches above the grate & time how long you can hold it there before you are forced to pull it back:

1 to 2 seconds — High Heat – This is perfect for your hot zone if you are searing a steak or grilling shrimp. Use this heat first to sear the outside and lock in the juices.

2 to 3 seconds — Medium High Range – Good for most fish fillets.

4 to 5 seconds — Medium Low Range – Ideal for most chicken and veggies.

7 to 8 seconds — Low Heat – Perfect for you warm zone to finish steaks or chops. Also good for grilling delicate vegetables and fruit.

1 minute – You forgot to light the grill!

“The Only BBQ Chicken Recipe You Need” Recipe

Ingredients:
4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
4 cloves garlic, very finely chopped or minced
2 tbsp. white wine vinegar
1 heaping tbsp. fresh thyme
1 tbsp. olive oil
2 1/2 tsp. Dijon mustard
2 tsp. red pepper/chili flakes
1/2 tsp. sea salt
1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper
cooking spray

1. In a small bowl, combine garlic, wine vinegar, thyme, mustard, honey, red pepper flakes, sea salt & pepper.  Mix well.  A few drops at a time, add the olive oil, stirring after each oil addition.

2. Either in a resealable bag or large bowl, add your chicken breasts and then pour the marinade over.  Refrigerate for 3 – 4 hours.

3. After the chicken has marinated, remove then from the liquid. Put the marinade into a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and allow marinade to simmer for 2 minutes.

4. Spray grill with cooking spray.  Add the chicken and cook for approximately 5 minutes on each side.  Use the marinade to baste the chicken every couple of minutes during the cooking process.  Serve while hot with a crisp salad or over steamed rice, using the remaining cooked marinade as a sauce.

Serves: 4.

Wedding Budgets: Cut Cost Not Style

If only your pockets were as deep as your love… Creating the wedding of your dreams is easy when budget is not a worry. For many couples today, staying within a wedding budget is a necessary piece when planning a wedding.  Deciding what matters the most, making smart decisions up front and applying your dollars appropriately can help keep costs under control.

Here are our Top 10 Wedding Budget Tips:

 1. When & Where: The higher the demand, the higher the price.  Get married “out of season” – October to April – so you are not competing with other brides for locations, photographers, and florists.  If you want fresh florals, avoid February when Valentine’s Day shoots prices through the roof.  Saturday is the most popular day and on average, reception venues come at a higher cost so choose a chic Friday evening cocktail reception or a sophisticated Sunday brunch. You’ll save not only on food but unless your friends are completely outrageous, there will be far less alcohol poured before lunch.

 2. Invitations: Quite simply, do them yourself.  All it takes is a trip to the stationary/craft store for paper & supplies, a good printer, access to a computer, and some basic design or photo editing software.  After you have the equipment, making wedding invitations is simply a matter of putting your creativity to work, expressing your style and originality.  Extra Tip: Consider using a postcard for the RSVP or have guests RSVP by email.  You’ll save on postage and stationary and you can track the response much easier than with snail mail.

 3. Cake: If you or someone in your family is a professional baker, baking your own cake could add that personal touch to your day. If you have your heart set on a wedding cake, another option is to have a smaller, less expensive professional cake for the cake cutting and then opt for the same cake in a slab form to be served to your guest. They will never see the slab nor know the difference. Cupcakes are also a money saver. Not only do you avoid cake cutting fees from hotels or catering staff, but you can also save on having to use extra dinnerware for cake service.

 4. Flowers: Keep it simple. A limited budget does not have to look skimpy. Choose flowers that are in season and do not mix too many different blooms. Less expensive flowers like mums in a large scale, look modern, flirty and certainly not frugal. Tie pretty satin or moire ribbon to the handle with some bling and no one will know you did it for pennies.  Use good quality artificial floral (yes, they exist!) for the Toss Bouquet and in your centerpieces. Don’t go to the dollar store; check out your craft store and get the expensive ones when they go on sale. They’ll still be cheaper than real and you can create a beautiful arrangement for your home after as a memento of your day.

 5. Dress: Don’t shy away from the sample dress or buying off the rack during seasonal sales.  Dresses are often 50% off and you can get something spectacular for a steal!  Super Tip: your perfect dress could be in the bridesmaid section where there are many beautiful, detailed styles and most come in white or ivory.  Go shopping for bridesmaid dresses during prom season or after New Year’s as there’s no law that you have to buy them at a bridal shop.  If you want sexy, strappy white or metallic shoes, buy them in the summer when sandals are on every shelf of every shoe and department store.  Are you a Fashionista?  Buy daring red or hot pink stunners that you can wear again.  Match them to your bouquet or decor colors for a modern and trendy touch.  They’ll make for a great photo-op!

 6. Decor: Spend your money on the things people will see the most.  Your guests may or may not notice the flowers on the end of the pews but they will notice the bouquets & boutonnieres during the day and in pictures.  Want to add extra details to the back of each guest’s chair?  Looks beautiful, but money could be better spent on centerpieces that people will look at the entire evening.  Candles add drama and style with little cost.  You can never go wrong or have too many so don’t skimp.  Instead of 5 per table, make it 10!  Super Tip: Use your bridal party bouquets on the head table as decor rather than pay for extra floral.

 7. Guest List: This can be a tricky one to maneuver but the simple truth is that there is no easier way to control your budget than by limiting the size of the event.  Again, your biggest cost will be the reception food and beverage so you can reduce this by limiting how many mouths you feed.  Remember: single guests that are not in a serious relationship can be invited solo (yes, that means no “and Guest” on their invite); it is okay to invite parents only; and you need not invite anyone who you haven’t spent time with in the last 5 years – even if they invited you to their wedding.

 8. Music: To sum it up, the least amount of people providing a service, the less expensive it will be.  This means for your Ceremony, go for an organist vs. a trio or string quartet and at your Reception, a DJ is far less expensive than a band.  Special lighting and fog machines cost money and let’s be honest, a really expensive package does not guarantee that your party will last longer of that your non-dancing guests will suddenly be bit by the bug.

 9. Photography: $1000.00 for a photographer is a great price but if they charge $40.00 for an 8×10, you’re not saving anything.  Don’t just look at package prices, ask about individual enlargements and album prices.  If you select a package with albums, ask how much the package would be without albums.  Sometimes it’s worth the savings to buy your own albums and make them up yourself.  It is also a great way to relive the day and add personalization to the album. Super Tip: Ask the photographer if they can provide a cd with high res images to you in place of prints or an album. You can then use the images to create slideshows to send to family members and only print the images you really want.

 10. Transportation: Where is it written in stone that you have to have a stretch limousine?  Save money by renting a car from somewhere like Budget or Enterprise.  They all have new luxury cars, sports cars, and SUV’s and rent at a fraction of the cost.

No matter your budget or personal style, every bride deserves to have the day she dreams of without the stress of how she’ll pay for it. By sticking to a budget that allows you to create your dream wedding but stays within the reality of paying for it later, planning your dream wedding will be a fun experience that both the bride, groom, and their wallets can enjoy before, during, and after the big day.

Edmonton Events: YESS

This past week the staff at Special Event Rentals attended the Youth Emergency Shelter Society’s (YESS) Great Expectations breakfast event. At the breakfast they had a few short presentations from staff and clients, both current and past who shared their stories and how YESS has benefitted their lives. It was amazing to hear their stories and to learn how YESS has helped some of Edmonton’s most vulnerable youth.

On May 27th, YESS is holding one of their signature events, Homeless for a Night at TELUS Field. This pledge based fundraiser has participants seek pledges in order to participate and the amount participants raise will determine where they sleep. Get out of your comfort zone for just one night and participate. For more information visit YESS online

Wedding Trends: Wedding Bouquets

Large, heavy bridal bouquets are a thing of the past as brides today are opting for flirty, fun, and romantic bouquets. This year’s bouquets are smaller but still add a pop of color or act as a lovely accent to brides and maids. This year we are seeing monochrome or tonal bouquets using one or more flower types but in the same color or a very similar range of colors. We are also seeing a trend in flowers being very whimsical, soft, and romantic almost as if the bride picked them herself from a garden or wildflower field. These bouquets have a self made, unstructured feel.

Whether your bouquet is a bold statement piece or a soft accent, focus on using your bouquet to compliment your wedding attire and as an extension of your personal style.
