Decoding Wedding Attire Requests

Have you received a wedding invitation requesting a specific dress code? We know that decoding wedding formality can be a tricky task. You want to arrive with confidence that you are dressed not only appropriately, but exceptionally. Here’s a breakdown of the sometimes puzzling attire language.

Decoding Wedding Attire Requests

White Tie:  This is the most formal wedding attire request. Think of the memorable moment during the movie Titanic when Rose walks down the stairs to the waiting and extremely dapper Jack. Ladies are encouraged to flaunt their jewels in classic dark gowns while men wear black jackets with tails, white vests, bow ties, and it’s optional to wear a pair of white gloves for dancing.

Black Tie: This dress formality is the perfect opportunity for you to go out and buy a new glamorous long evening gown or tailored tuxedo. Black tie weddings are generally held later in the day making dark neutral tones the most suitable choice for this wedding attire request.

Formal or Black Tie Optional: You may choose to wear black tie attire or formal attire which is a little more relaxed. If you decide to go for the formal route, a formal dark suit and tie will be the dress attire for the men while women are encouraged to wear a formal cocktail dress. Again, the clothes should be in dark neutral tones.

Semiformal or Dressy Casual: This formality is the trickiest of the all. The key to figuring out what would be appropriate is to take note of the location of the wedding. If the venue is on the fancier side, opt for more glitz and glam. If the venue is at a more relaxed location, go for lighter colours. A charming cocktail dress is the best style for the women while men can come wearing a suit and tie.

Casual: When you see this formality on the invitation think business casual. This means a great sun dress or blouse and skirt combination is appropriate for the ladies.  The men can wear a nice button-down shirt, dress pants and shoes.

Beach: This attire notation is less of an expectation and more of a warning. Be aware of the elements: sand, sun, wind and water. Ladies, we suggest putting your hair up and wearing an elegant maxi dress and nice sandals (not flip flops). Men, sport either a summer suit or button up shirt with khakis and a nice pair of appropriate sandals.
